If the little girls of the 1950s were made, as the old poem suggests, of “sugar and spice and everything nice,” today’s little girls are made of guts, smarts and the will to succeed.
In a 1989 study by the British Journal of Guidance and Counseling, girls said they aspired to be teachers, nurses, flight attendants, secretaries and hairdressers. In a 2015 survey by Fatherly Magazine, girls’ No. 1 pick was doctor, followed by teacher and scientist.
Sophie and Capey are the embodiment of this sentiment, transplanted into the landscape of a child’s imagination. Sophie is a typical three-year-old girl; a little shy and a little anxious about the big world around her, but when she puts on Capey -- an old costume cape she found in the closet -- she becomes a Super-version of herself. Empowered, smart and fearless, the team of Sophie and Capey are ready to show every child how they can be super just by being who they are.
There is a direct link between the rise of pop culture figures like Supergirl, Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel and the aspirations of the next generation of women, and Sophie & Capey dovetail on that trend to present the starter kit to encourage girls to dream big and live bigger.
